1.1 (en) Welcome to my home page (R3vLibre)
My name is Christophe Schockaert.
I spend most of my time, and I as long as I can remember I always have, in four areas, alternatively and combined in varying degrees: nature, science & technics, martial arts cutlure, and fantasy & Faërie.
This introduction is more focused on the computer & tech culture, as this is my geek & tech profile and website. Its aim is at the same time to give an insight of who I am in this area, and to give a way learn something about that culture, if not already familiar with it :) Other areas will be expanded elsewhere later on, at that time, they will be listed in the presentation below.
Indeed, among these areas of interests, this brought me in touch with computers when I was just about to be a teenager, just at the time home computers and personal computers were starting to spread into families where conditions were favorable for that (indeed, I had this chance). I was fascinated by these computers, and was grateful to be able to explore them. This eventually led to become my profession.
During that time, I happened to have what I call today, luck: to be part of the Internet at the early stages and to watch it evolve, eventough I was not aware it was building up (well, and the good news, is that it still is, actually, and I learned and I am still leraning a lot from a whole range of people, namely this content exists because of all what others people built and shared). At that time, it was "a thing" to have a "home page", i.e. your own corner of the web, either standalone, or part of a larger organization (like acadmeics, organizations you were involved in, etc).
This is what the label for this page is for, it is a reminder for that time.
But, it is also a stand to reclaim our own places on the web and the Internet. Further about this in the page A few more words about R3vLibre…
For that purpose, this page acts as a statement for my online presence. You will find, further, links to places where I express myself online, either on websites or "the social web". It is split into two parts.
The first one is what I will call "the open Internet of sharing", this is where I spend most of my time online.
The second one, is the "Internet enclosed by the corporations", where I keep a minimal presence for connecting to people, and spreading messages that will benefit from spreading, eventhough I am aware it contributes to the usage of these platforms I prefer to stay away from.
So, from that time exploring computers, all along my life, I went through very different activities each with its own culture (while also circling among similar similar activities and cultures over time, I could compare this process as following a spiral where I am coming back to previous stuff but in another time, another context, with different sight), even if it is sometimes wholly numeric interactions. What I learned through these experiences, is to regularly reconsider my sight and open my mind.
You will find a glimpse of these areas of life at my presentation hereunder.
At the present time, this home page, this website, all this is yet to improve, the design has to be perfected, and text completed.
1.1.1 Fediverse and open online communities
This is where I spend time on "the Internet of links and sharing", that is, communities made of people part of the communities. It’s not a perfect peaceful haven, I don’t want to claim any false promises. Like with every human interactions, there are frictions, and also opposite views, some we would not like to encounter too. But it’s made by people, for the people. It aims to empower us, provide tools that are tailored for us instead of plying us to the tools. It’s work in progress though, and we (as a participating community) also need to innovate rather than mimic what exists elsewhere. Creativity is there, it takes time. But there is a thing already, there is no algorithm. The algorithm is you, it is us, we push forward what is meaningful to us, and there is no incentive for pushing even more, all the time, the most succesful ones. Timing and people define what is shown in the places below that are part of the federated social web, the so called Fediverse. It’s not perfect, still, I remind you.
Here is the list of places where you can find me online, when you see a check mark "✓", it means that the linked profile is authenticated from this web page, here.
- R3vLibre – This web page, my geek & tech identity
- Erenthar (alias) – The guardian of the Citadels, an alias for R3vLibre, a name with a fantasy setting background, dedicated to taking care of the website, writing, designing, maintaining and updating the technical aspects ; I will use it as an alias in several places
The Citadels @ Neocities – a playground for me to practice handcrafting a website, as before... When I’ll find some time ^^ Additionally, it aims to make know this woundrous initiative as creative hosting :)- ✓
Mastodon(r3vlibre) – my micro-blogging activities in the Fediverse (most of my interactions today), hosted by Tetaneutral
(to come) Hubzilla(r3vlibre) – A general social media platform, still has to be restored

- My presentation
If anything was constant in my life, it is the love for nature and technics, in particular electronics and computers, and being nourished by mythical imaginaries, which results in cycles, either short cycles (alternatively being in touch with these spheres every month or few months), or long cycles (spending years focusing on one of these topics). Today, the cycles tend to be shorter because I am conscious that I need this balance.
It started with the love of nature, I would say that was innate. Today, I can put words on it, it was (and is indeed) about the relation to the nature and the living beings. But these things were not valuated in the society, because it is not material and accountable. However, when paying attention, fairytales tell us that’s the most precious, and it starts to be recognized today and speaked out. It is almost time ! Let me thank the spiritual traditions that made me aware of that, and those that put this viewsight in explicit words as a philosophical view that anyone can feel and embrace as a human being whatever her or his own beliefs, even if none.
After that, I dived into computers and technics, exploring computers, spending time in both gaming and in programming. I also had a glimpse of the BBS era that is still with me today. This passionate hobby led me to study academics at "L’Université Libre de Bruxelles" where I graduated as an IT engineer and brought me to exert my profession, as well as some side story activities. It is at the university that I discovered the GNU and Linux system, and the free and open source movement that would cause the first drastic change in my sight of the world. We could build and share software collectively. Actually, not only software.
The third part is an aspiration for the fantasy and mythological literacy, that took a specific shape through the role playing games, and inspired me to involve in concrete live activities from there, notably martial arts under a few different cultures, exploring and immersing within nature through outdoor activities, celtic spirituality, getting curious about some arts I would not think of, and… the love for stories ! Well, all that until some level only, because of the ratio spent in books vs. in real life, but still, slowly progress arises.
So, now, here, you will find my presentation as seen on the Fediverse that somehow gathers all those parts…
Geek at soul, I am a 🌿nature🌦️ lover (eventhough it does not exist), curious and dreamer. I also fulfill myself to see the nature come to me by pixels, pygments, or stories :)
Ah yeah, I love 🖋️ stories !
And 📚books ! Plenty ! 🏰Middle Ages, 🗝️ myths, ☘️Celtic and ❄️Nordic, ⛩️ Tao, 🀄kung-fu, ⚔️HEMA, 🎲roleplaying games, 🎨illustrations, 🖥 Unix🐚, 🦄 '(Org-Mode)
What is my 💎gemstone ? The most beautiful magic, is the power to ✨re-enchant the 💞hearts et the 🌍world.
1.1.2 Online presence within BigTech corporate silos
I gave a try to BigTech social media at about the same time I was discovering identi.ca, the first platform that launched what we now refer to as the Fediverse.
At that time (around 2011-2013), I was a bit reluctant with social media, not knowing exactly what to expect from it, or what to say in it. Starting within my community of trust made me make the jump.
From there, I gave a try to the popular places at BigTech, namely Facebook and Twitter (it was spreading at that time, with no foreseeable future to be named X afterwards), and started to join a few contacts as, well, you know, most people do X) What was great, was that I could link these accounts from the Fediverse and be able to read and write all of my accounts from one single place on the Fediverse (well, that’s the kind of geeky stuff that I like). Until that, venture capital being venture capital, the corporations decided to prevent that technically, then by legal terms.
This is the time I gave up with BigTech, and eventhough small, the Fediverse was growing, slowly growing, and I had all I wanted within it.
And I actually still have, more than ever, it’s lively today <3
However, I recently decided to go for a change (about 1 or 2 years ago), and to act for it (second part of 2024).
I explain how and why under A few more words about R3vLibre…
In summary, despite their cost (ecological, mental health, their worrying political influence on democracy, their financial power over states, …) that we need to rise awareness of, and even more, to act knowingly ; well, despite all this, BigTech platforms bring something and communities rely on them. And, knowing that the best stance not to give them power, is to stop using them, I am also aware it will be a long time before they are ever not needed anymore, and that everybody find shelter within open projects on platforms tailored at human level. But it happens eventually, old good ICQ (in the sense that it was the first popular service in that style at that time, although indeed commercial, closed and centralized) shut down recently for good, while IRC and XMPP are still up. There is also a reason that can be invoked, is that other voices need to be heard there. But it’s a game with unfair rules (algorithms, finances and mindset form a sort of retroactive loop not in favor of balance, listening and mutual respect, although it can be different depending on the platform) and it was not my main incentive (which does not prevent me to play that card).
Considering all this, I felt like I was on the way to make a switch. A switch from being an activist, to being commited. The phrasing is not from me, I heard it from the journalist Paloma Moritz, and I felt it suited well to whom I am myself and fitted my personal path, so I borrowed it from her words: (in french) https://mediascitoyens-diois.info/2023/09/paloma-moritz-journaliste-engagee-mais-pas-militante-ecolo/
Yes, I ended up realizing we need both, people who are strict and stick to their line, acting like a lighthouse for a direction to follow, and people who act as bridges.
The thing is, today, I am ready to act as a bridge. I understand people like the platforms they got familiar with, the communities they built. I am still convinced we need to be aware of the cost, both ecological, and both on how they shape our online interactions, and I hope people will get more inclined to be part of the Fediverse as it will become more attractive, if not because of commitment. Some others won’t want a better world (both online, and in the real world, with a stronger sense of harmony and respect to nature), the only thing I can hope is that there will be more of us wanting to engage a better relationship with life, so that it opens a space for others to join and enables more people to join, and that those who don’t want better relationships become a minority. And, to state it clearly, this will need and involve changes in the way we shape our society too.
All this being said, I am ready to act as a bridge, and that’s the why. Hhereunder, you will find the places within the world of corporate enclosed walls where I will fill the gap online with a bridge. In most of these, I will use "Erenthar" as an alias, because my activities will mainly be related to fantasy and Faërie, entertainment, contacts with relatives, and, without any surprises, I will also focus on news about nature & ecology. The personal interactions will be low, reduced to "private" circles. Of course, that does not mean you won’t find bits of hacktivism there, just that it won’t be the biggest part. After all, "Erenthar" is the fantasy guardian of a techie website ;)
